BUDDHDIC ======== Introduction ------------ This file is an extract from Chuck Muller's monumental Digital Dictionary of Buddhism (DDB) (see http://www.acmuller.net/ddb/index.html) Chuck kindly provided an extract in XML format of the full database. From this I generated an EDICT-format version containing the Japanese headword (kanji and reading) and the short English meaning. The Buddhdic file is in two versions: (a) in UTF8 coding; (b) in EUC-JP, converted by the "uniconv" utility from Basis Technology. (buddhdic) In this version several of the kanji were substituted with alternatives as the originals did not exist in the JIS X 0208 and JIS X 0212 codesets. Also in the this version the Japanese reading of the kanji is in hiragana instead of the original katakana. Note that the meaning field contains a number of Sanskrit words written using the Latin alphabet with diacritic marks. These characters are coded as UTF8 characters and JIS X 0212 characters respectively in the two files. The meaning are very brief. The full discussion of the terms can be found in the DDB database. The files were prepared primarily to make a source of terms used in Buddhism available in the WWWJDIC dictionary server. Permissions ----------- The DDB WWW page says: "You can freely use, copy, modify and distribute the data we have written for any noncommercial purpose, provided that you duly acknowledge the source." Using the file -------------- These files are pure data. They can be viewed by any software capable of handling a large (approx. 39,000-line) text file in the two codings. Enquiries --------- Enquiries about the content of these files should be directed to Chuck Muller, (acmuller[at]gol.com). Enquiries about the coding and format can be directed to Jim Breen (jwb@csse.monash.edu.au). Revised edition. August 2006
